Missing 80 GB on Hard Drive?

Aug 8, 2008 5:50PM PDT

I have Windows Vista Home Premium on my new HP Pavilion dv6910us laptop. When I bought it, it said it had a 200 GB hard drive. After I installed everything and set it up, I believe it said I had 160 GB left. So I figured that Vista had taken 40 GB up. No big deal, I guess. Then, the next day, it said I had 150 or something. I found that odd, but I guessed it might have installed things once I turned it off. Then, it went down to 138 GB for a week or so. Today, it changed to 120 GB after installing pretty much nothing. Can anyone help me?

I'm considering returning this computer to Circuit City and getting a new one, seeing as I've already had issues with not being able to hear the volume on DVDs.

Another possibility

Another possibility to explain this, is I've seen similar behavior when someone has a rootkit on their system and it's been turned into a dump site for pirated software and movies.

Of course it is an HP, so you're probably better off returning it. Don't recall seeing any good brands the last time I was in a Circuit City, though it was kind of a small store. Just remember seeing mostly Acer, HP/Compaq, and Gateway systems, all of which I would avoid as much as possible. Though if I absolutely had to pick one, I'd probably go with Gateway.

Yeah but I was wondering

I was wondering if it was normal for 80 GB to be taken up because I heard that Vista like is shadowing something for if your computer breaks down or something?
