Minor audio annoyance............

Oct 4, 2010 1:12AM PDT

Dell E510
3.2Gig/3gig ram, running Vista clean install with bios upgrade.Performance is and has been flawless until a week or so ago.

Whenever I start or reboot, the audio defaults to "muted" and it's driving me mad!

Admittedly it's no problem to quickly right click and turn it on but I can't find the setting to restore this thing to my version of "normal".I want the audio on when the machine boots, not muted.

Sounds proper.

A vista clean install means so much to do after we finish the OS. Have Dell supply a working Windows Vista install document. Sorry I no longer do this. Turns out many are upset at such instructions since it involves more than a mouse click.

For example a Vista clean install would not have drivers and the all important Dell Quickset.

Thanks Bob,

I forgot to say that the clean install was done almost two years ago and this muted business started about two weeks ago.If it were as you say,why would it be normal for so long and then suddenly change? Could it be due to any recent windows updates?

Sadly yes.

If you read the forums the same story is told over and over. Often with "I didn't change a thing?" to "Is it windows update?"

Which is why I like Grif's advice about malware scans:

Also as machines age, they can develop faults like a hard drive issue. The trouble as I see it are the makers that supply no decent diagnostics even after 3 decades of PC production.
