Question

MIMO Wifi Receiver Card with (possibly?) standard router

Nov 29, 2016 3:03PM PST

Hi everyone!
I'm living next to my university building and want to access the WIFI there (which is legal, don't worry).

I've found the PCE-AC88 which seems like a really good Wifi-Adapter. My question is: This adapter has 4 antennas and MIMO enabled. Will this help me even if the university router (which I don't know) does not support MIMO or should I go for a cheaper receiver card?

Thanks in advance!

Is that better cards rarely give you more range. To get more range you try antennas.

Antennas and MIMO

Thanks! It has 4 antennas included and they're external, so I could easily upgrade them. Do you think it's useful to upgrade just one or would I have to upgrade all of them at the same time? (Otherwise I'd buy one very powerful one and leave the others as they are)

You can only tell by testing

I'm sure you know your physics. To get double the range you need 4 times the power. No card allows such so range improvement is usually in to single to at most 10% more range. All those articles over the years compare the worst routers and cards to show how much better the new product is.

It's a shame you didn't reveal the distance you need to cover, line of sight and if anyone else is using it under similar conditions.
