midi files downloaded

by butterfly41 / September 23, 2004 1:22 AM PDT

I am very new to computers and downloaded some music into the My Music folder so that I could copy it onto CD. The files are all midi and don't show up in any of my players. I have Realplayer, Musicmatch and windows media player. If I go directly into My Music the folders are all there but I can't do anything with them. I'm about to have a very quiet nervous breakdown, so could someone please help me without assuming I know what I'm doing!!!!!!! My operating systen is Windows ME

Butterfly,

Which version of Windows Media Player do you have installed. 6.4? 7.1, something else?

What are you trying to do with the midi files that you downloaded? If you're only trying to play them, then opening the folders you say are in "My Music", then double clicking on one of the files with the .mid file extension should cause it to play using your default player for that file type. My default for that file type is Windows Media Player, but each computer may be different.

If you're trying to burn them to a CD so you can play them on a CD player, then you'll need a program that converts midi file to .cda files on the CD. If you're just trying to copy them to a CD as data file, then that should be easy. Which CD burner program do you use?

Hope this helps and let us know more.

I am using Windows Media Player 7.0 and Nero Express and I'm trying to make a playable CD. Even when I just try to open the music file it won't play. Thank you very much for your suggestions, if you have any more I would be delighted! That nervous breakdown is getting closer.
Thanks,

Butterfly, What Happens When....
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / October 16, 2004 11:58 AM PDT

...you open the "My Music" folder and simply double click on the .mid file? It is a .mid file? Correct? Does it look like it's playing or is there an error message? If there is a message, please give the EXACT message.

Hope this helps.

Hi,
I play a lot of midi files and I use WinAmp (a free player you can get on www.winamp.com) but they will also play with Windows Media Player. As mentioned, just click twice on the one you want to play.
Winamp will also change midi files to wav files(then Nero will change to cda) - but I haven't discovered the winamp plugin that will do this. They have plugins on the site - you might want to try them.
