Microsoft words opens only with Adobe Acrobat

Dear members
After downloading Adobe Acrobat 8; Microsoft words stopped opening in the proper mannar, to open any M/W document it opens with a dialogue box called File Conversion box asking to select the encoding to make your document readable, 1- Windows default 2- M:DOS 3- Other encoding.
I tried three of them what I get in the three options is a set of unreadable codes, but when I right click on the icon and choose OPEN WITH ADOBE ACROBAT the document opens in the proper manner, how can get it to open in the normal manner i.e. to open right away by clickin on it and not by right clicking and choose Adobe aacrobat.

Right click an icon or the actual file?

BIG difference. You need to right click the actual .doc file and choose open with. Point to MS Word, and save it as the default opener.

Thanks for your support and help, you really solved the problem, but what happened is; I followed your instructions by right clicking on the icon in documents went to open with; there are three choices there Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft words and Internet explorer, I tried three of them and chose each one to be my default, ofcourse one at a time,the only one which brought it back to normal was the Interenet explorer, the other two just behaved the same as before.
