Microsoft Word won't open and freezes computer.

Mar 26, 2004 3:23AM PST

I can't get microsoft word 2000 to open. My computer locks up and when I CTRL-ALT-DEL I get a message that says resources are low and I need to close programs. I go through a series of program closures but nothing helps. I deleted temp files, etc. and my drive space readings show I have plenty of space. I can run other programs. It is just Word that is causing me problems. I tried to defrag and it would hit 1% then back to 0. This is even after I shut down screen savers, etc. Can anyone help a completely clueless computer user?

This universal "fix it" for Word generally does the job. The "Normal.dot" file can get corrupted and needs to be recreated.

Do a search for "Normal.dot" (yes that's "Normal dot dot". Delete all "Normal.dot" files that come up in the Search window. Restart the computer, then start Word. A new, fresh "Normal.dot" file will be created and should allow the program to work correctly.

Hope this helps.

Whenever posting questions on these forums, please give us as much information as possible about your computer. We need the operating system, processor speed, amount of RAM installed, brand name of the computer, (if there is one), and any EXACT error messages you are receiving, plus any other information you think might be helpful. The more information you give us, the better informed our answer will be.

In the meantime, please click on the link below and follow the steps (parts 1-4) to perform a computer clean up:

Just to make sure that you don't have any viruses, it would be a good idea to click on the link below and run the free online virus scanner that it provides:

Hope this helps.
