Microsoft Word - something mysterious going on....

Sep 26, 2005 11:30PM PDT

I have been sent a document, to assess as part of a proof reading interview, its been cleverly formatted so that spelling mistakes, bad grammar and most other things dont show up.

Ive tried copying and pasting it into a fresh document, but the format of not showing errors, seems to transfer with the text.

How can i break through this trickery!!

Also please explain in terms of which menu I should select, which option and so forth, because I cantalso change my Microsoft Word 2003 user interface language settings from Chinese to English, so each menu item (File, View, etc...) is in Chinese, its a real nightmare, so any help on this would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Always remember that in life, you only get out what you put in!!!

Make sure...

Make sure that spelling/grammer checking is enabled in Word. Go "tools->options->spelling & grammer" and verify the following:
* Check "check spelling as you type."
* UNcheck "hide spelling errors in this document."
* Check "always suggest corrections."
* Check "check grammer as you type."
* UNcheck "hide gramatical errors in this document."
* Check "check grammer with spelling."
* From the drop-down menu, select "grammer & style."

As far as changing your interface settings, I don't know if it's possible...you might need to purchase an English version of MS Word. (Which regional version do you have?)

Hope this helps,
John

Not a mystery...

How do you know that the document is cleverly formated to hide mistakes ? I suspect that what you have been sent is a document that has been edited for mistakes. If so, there is nothing you can do. However, try this: In your Word program, turn off spelling and grammar checking, then open the document.

For the second question, try Control Panel>Regional and language Settings.

If you don't have the English version of Word, you won't see English menu's. Easy to solve via any software shop. And that's the only way to do so.

To see errors, you need the English dictionary and grammar files. Do you have those? And, of course, the language in the document should be set to English, with spelling and grammar check enabled. If you tell Word 'the document is in Bengali and don't do spelling and grammar check' (it's in the Tools>Language menu) you'll never get the result you seem to expect.
