Microsoft Word launch gradually slower

Mar 8, 2006 2:05PM PST

I have had Microsoft Office 2002 (XP) installed on my computer running Windows XP SP2 for half a year now and I've noticed that Microsoft Word's program launch is not as snappy as it was before. I think I've read somewhere that it has to do with the accumulation of AutoSave files and other temporary files. Is this true? If so, how can I purge them? If not, what other culprit can be lurking behind the scenes? Response appreciated, thanks.

Steven

Try

The standard repair for Word: locate and delete all instances of a file called NORMAL.DOT. That alone should improve/solve your problem.

Try also a safe cleanup tool like CCleaner:

www.ccleaner.com

Download and install it.

Start the program and under the ''Cleaner'' section tick all options and hit the ''Run Cleaner'' button.

Reboot when finished.

Cheers,

Zee

As long as the program actually works correctly, please try eliminating unnecessary start up programs and services which cause an overall slow down and eliminate the junk files on the computer. Please follow the instructions below. It may take a while to perform all the procedures but the computer should open files and programs faster afterwards:

Start by eliminating the unnecessary start up programs:

For Windows 2000/XP, ignore the first couple of sentences about checking ''resources'' and the ''Performance'' tab in the link below but follow the rest of the procedures including the ''Services'' links at the bottom.

How To Shut Down Unnecessary Start Up Programs

Because the links for the ''Services'' are no longer functioning in the link above, use this one:

Services Guide For Windows XP

Next, clean out the junk files:

How To Clean Unwanted Files From The Hard Drive

If you're using Windows XP SP2, then follow these steps to tidy up a little more:

Cleanup After SP2 Installation

After following all the procedures above, run Error Checking/Chkdsk and Defrag to optimize the hard drive:

Hope this helps.
