Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 quit working...

Sep 26, 2009 8:23PM PDT

Well the title basically says it all. As of maybe an hour ago I was simply browsing around the internet and the mouse started to skip, only trying to move the pointer for about half a second every 5seconds, then finally quit, it wouldn't right click, left click, scroll, or anything. Knowing the lil message has been coming up on my screen almost daily for a couple weeks now "Warning: Your mouse battery is critically low, please replace them immediately." I simply figured the batteries were dead so I dug around for two new AA batteries, put them in, pressed the button on the keyboard/mouse receiver and then on the mouse itself and nothing happened, the scanning bar just kept moving back and forth on the receiver till after one minute it stopped the scan, not detecting the mouse, only the keyboard and the keyboard still worked fine. I've gone though every single AA battery in my house and none worked, thinking this was a lil weird I tested out some of the batteries in other things like my TV remote, and flash light, they both worked without a single problem. I put one pair of AA batteries that I tested as good back in the mouse then pulled out my camera phone and looked at the laser under the mouse since this mouse has "Microsoft Invisible Laser Technology" (Cameras can see more waves of light then the human eye, hold your camera up to a TV remote and press a button on the remote you will see what I mean.) and saw no light. So now I don't know what else to do... I don't know if I still have the receipt as I have to dig through the closet for it, if I do find it I'll just get a replacement, but first I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions. My only guess I have is that somehow running the mouse on near-dead batteries for so long damaged something inside the mouse. Because it is only around 3months old I think, no more then half a year.

The pairing instructions are on the bottom of the receiver..

It just says "1. Press the button on the receiver. 2. Press the button on your keyboard or mouse."
As far as finding the receipt I'm out of luck, I looked everywhere for it and I guess I accidentally threw it out along with the box the keyboard and mouse came in. So now I'll have to look into the warranty with Microsoft instead of Staples where I bought it.

Well it just randomly started working again...

I had charged some batteries and put them in the mouse but it still didn't work so I gave up and went to bed, then when I woke up I shook the mouse and to my surprise the computer monitor turned on and the mouse pointer was moving just fine. So... my only guess can be is their is some internal battery that needed to charge off of the AA batteries I put in before it could turn on? I'm not sure. Either way thank you to everyone that commented trying to help. After I get some more money the next thing I'm buying is a quality USB mouse. Pointless to have wireless when the keyboard and mouse can't be more then 2feet from the receiver. Yet when it's plugged into my PS3 the keyboard and mouse can be up to around 10feet away before they even start skipping, which is just weird.

My lesson.

Don't use rechargeables in these things.

Well I took the rechargable batteries out

and put normal ones in but now it won't work at all. I've tried leaving the batteries out of it for a day then putting them back in, it still wouldn't work, I left the batteries in for a day, still wouldn't work, it's just completely quit now. So now I'll have to look into the warranty but I'm sure that will require a receipt which has magically disappeared when I save my receipts for every computer part I buy. So for now I'm stuck using a old IBM mouse that I can't even scroll on a web page without it getting "stuck" and making the page shoot up and down.

Find your receipt, take it back, then get a LOGITECH NANO and have done with it.
