Just got new machine with XP Home and SP1a. Do I need to download MS VM or the Sun version or is it now redundant? Many thanks

Ian

With the ongoing issue of the Cool Web hijacker that is put on too many web sites, JAVA from Sun or the old MSJVM is now banished from the office machines. At the office we don't need it, so it's not loaded since it's a security issue.

As to your need. Why do you need it?

The Microsoft JVM is very old, based on something like Java 1.1.4. Sun's is always based on the latest version of Java, currently 1.4.2, with 1.5 getting close to release. You should always use Sun's JVM as it is the official JVM.

But like Bob said, don't install it if you don't need it.

Thanks, guys. I guess I thought I needed it because I used to see on web sites messages like 'make sure you have java enabled' or some such, and java doesn't appear in IE options advanced without downloading it. I'm not long out of W98 though so am probably just out of date. I also thought it might help correct my hotmail problem, but that's another story (thread). Thanks again.

Remember that Cool Web Hijacker will want you to Java...

Same messages at the office all the time. We don't want the hijacking software, so we take the pre-emptive strike and don't load Java.

They really need to get more security in that.
