Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Error "ccSvcHst.exe"

Jul 12, 2007 5:02PM PDT

I started noticing strange things after downloading Safari. Even though I downloaded the security updates, I still had problems.

Now when booting up, everything seems normal then the blue screen appears w/ Microsoft logo in middle, the mouse moves, but nothing happens for a long time. A little later I get the error message:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error
Program:C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe
"This application has requested the RUntime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications' support team for more information"

I tried starting in safe mode and last known good config...
But does the same exact thing each time.

Symantec Norton 360 Tech Support couldn't help me.
Gateway had me buy their "Gateway Shield" but w/o access to the desktop, I can't install the Window Washer to see if that would work.
Don't know if there's another way to try?

I'm desperate to not format the harddrive and reinstall everything.
I have a backup drive which I disconnected for now.
If someone could give me idea on what else I can do to try to save the system.

Worst case scenario, can someone send me directions on how to partition and reformat the drive?

Windows XP
Gateway 550GR
Norton 360
Spy Sweeper

ccSvcHst.exe is a Nortons Security application

Do you have Norton's Internet Security or some other Norton product on your computer?

If so, then it seems this is failing to load on startup.

Try opening Norton and use it to look for any updates to the program.

If that doesn't work I would uninstall Norton and re-install. Uninstall from the Add/Remove Programs, then use Norton Removal Tool before re-installing.

can't access the desktop

The problem is that it doesn't even allow me to see the desktop, so I can't uninstall or install anything. Norton 360 has a firewall built in. It's the antivirus and firewall protection all in one.

I missed that.

Sorry I missed that.

Safe mode doesn't load and you get to the same blue progress bar? I didn't think the progress bar appeared when booting XP into Safe mode. Did you try the very first Safe Mode option?

If you don't have the XP installation disk from Gateway, you need those. Gateway should supply them at a low cost. I don't know if the drivers are supplied on the same disk, or separately.

If Safe Mode doesn't work your options are limited;

1] Find a computer where you can down load a version of Linux called Knoppix. It will be in ISO format so burn it as an ISO to a CD. This is a Linux OS that can be run from a CD, but your BIOS will need to recognize to boot from a CD. Run Knoppix from the CD in your computer and this will give you the option of copying your important files to other media, eg a 2nd CD ROM, or 2nd disk, etc.

2] When Gateway send you that disk, use it to repair the XP installation, or if necessary, reformat and re-install.

3] Use the recovery partition provided by Gateway to restore your system to factory setup. The recovery partition is usually listed after the BIOS POST displays.
