Microsoft to stop Windows 98 support in Jan 2004

What is needed to upgrade to Windows XP Pro from Windows 98SE? Is there an upgrade cd or do you need to purchase the full version cd? Any other information related to this will be appreciated. Thanks Bob

The upgrade is cheaper but you can do a clean install from the upgrade software if you have your 98 windows key. It's better to do a clean install. Backup all your files you want to keep and install XP from scratch.

I have two machines. One I upgraded from 98SE to XP Pro and have problems every now and then. The other computer I built from parts and used another XP Pro Upgrade disk to install from scratch. Haven't had any problems and it didn't ask me for my 98 windows key like people say it should but maybe mine was just a freak occurrance.

Since you have Win98 you'll only need the upgrade CD for eith XP HE or Pro.

The best way is to do a clean install.

Make sure you check that your PC is compatible with XP.
Go to this site to run an XP Readiness Test:
http://www.pcpitstop.com/xpready/default.asp
It will tell you if any hardware/software are incompatible.

Also during setup do not forget to create a user profile for daily use instead of using the Administrator account.
