Question

Microsoft Services

Sep 11, 2013 8:43AM PDT

Hi All,

I am running Microsoft 8 on a Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332 laptop with an HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer operating wirelessly.

I am having trouble printing and I am getting messages that the printer is not ready or the printer is in an error state. I called Hewlitt Packard and they connected online to my computer. The technician told me that many of the Microsoft Services were disabled.

Please help me solve this problem.

Thank you,
Bob

Microsoft Services Disabled

Nobody tinkered with my computer so I guess we are talking about malware or an infection. I will run a scan to see if anything turns up and let you know.

No Virus's Found

Hi All,

I ran the virus scan and my computer came up clean.

So how can I reenable these services, if that is my problem, of course.

Thanks,
Bob

The link I gave should cover that.

Microsoft Services

Thank you.

Now how do I know what Services should be enabled.

I want to add at this point that the Hewlitt Packard Technician told me that the services weren't enabled after hooking up with my computer. What I find strange about this is that the printer seems to work sometimes. It seems to me that if a necessary Microsoft Service was disables, the printer would never work.

Perhaps I should try to reload the HP drivers but I'm afraid of making things worse.

Please advise and thank you again.

Microsoft Services
Sep 12, 2013 10:29AM PDT

Hi Bob,

I'm looking at a window that says "Windows Features" and "Turn Windows Features On And Off" and I presume that these are the Windows "Services".

If a Windows Service is turned off as the Hewlitt Packard technician said, how do I know what Service/Services to turn on for my problem. Should I just turn all of them on?

Also, at the same time that I am asking you this, I'm wondering whether or not the HP technician was correct in what he said. I say this because my printer seems to work sometimes and my thinking is that if a service is not enabled, it should never work.

Thanks,
Bob

That only applies to services with two asterisks.

Why not use services and get some services back to normal?

It's odd to try to add or remove services before you get the services back to normal.

Just after the note about two asterisks I read:
"Do not use "msconfig" to disable services, type "services.msc" in the Run box (Windows Key + R) instead!"

At least we are not chatting about the mystery of the Three Seashells in Demolition Man.
