Donna, I forgot to ask. I read where Microsoft no longer supports Windows 98SE, which is what I have. Does that mean that it is useless for me to run "Windows Update?"
They will support Win98/98SE until Jan. 16, 2005 as per Windows Desktop Product Life Cycle:
Windows 98/98SE
Entering Non-Supported phase - January 16, 2004
End of Life - January 16, 2005
Microsoft will offer paid incident support on Windows 98/98 SE through January 16, 2004. Windows 98/98 SE downloads for existing security issues will continue to be obtainable through normal assisted support channels at no charge during this time. Customers can request Windows 98/98 SE fixes for new security issues and these requests will be reviewed. Fixes for any new security issues can be specifically requested through normal assisted support channels. Web-based self-help support will be available for at least one year after assisted support has concluded. Mainstream support for Windows 98/98 SE ended on June 30, 2002, and no-charge incident support and extended hotfix support ends on June 30, 2003.
Thanks again, Donna. I have been holding back "upgrading to XP" because of concerns that I will have problems with printer, scanner etc. I guess I need to bite the bullet.
You can go to Windows Hardware Compatibility List to find out if your existing hardware is supported in Windows XP.
BTW, you can go use the Windows Desktop Support Life-Cycle Wizard to find out how long Microsoft plans to make assisted support offerings available for their products. ![]()
Donna, when I ran the compatiblity test a little while back, it said I would not have conflicts except the "possiblity" that my NSW 2003 and Norton Firewall 2003 " might not work with XP. Do you know if they will work with XP or will I have to buy 2004 versions of both prorams?
NSW 2003 and Norton Firewall 2003 works with WinXP. I'm using them in WinXP Pro.
I suggest that you install WinXP as fresh not as upgrade. Also, try to visit the site of your hardware vendors to download the latest driver or driver for WinXP users. Doing this, you will also find out if your hardware are supported or not.![]()
I was hoping to save the difference between $99 and $199 by doing the upgrade. Thanks for your quick responses.
Hi again,
You can do a WinXP clean installation even if your WinXP is an upgrade CD. You'll just have to make sure that you have the Windows 98SE CD which will be use to verify that you are qualified.
Instructions on how to clean-install WindowXP using a WinXP upgrade CD is here
BTW, you can download the Upgrade advisor from Microsoft which will check your system hardware and software to see if it is ready for upgrade to Windows XP.![]()
