Dear Ken,

Try "Tools">"Auto-correct options".
Disable everything there, and word should not interfere with your editing anymore.

I know, I encounter the same annoyances myself. Microsoft, trying to make everything as easy as possible, even with "PROFESSIONAL", just doesn't realize that someone that's NOT a moron might be using their software.

Let me know if this helps,

Styles

The ability to turn the "automatically update styles" on and off still remains in the old style menu. In newer versions of Word, the very annoying "Styles and Formatting" menu has become the default. However, the older style menu still exists, and that is the one I prefer and use.
Go to Tools, Customize and select the Commands tab. In Categories, select the Format menu. Remove the existing "Styles and Formatting" icon from your toolbar, and replace it with the "Style" icon instead. (This icon is located about 2/3 of the way down in the list of commands.)
Now, when you bring up this older style menu, click on Modify and check or uncheck "Automatically update" as needed.
I understand your frustration, for, when I upgraded to Office 2003, I nearly panicked at the thought of using the new style menu. Thankfully I was able to find this old familiar friend and just wish that Microsoft would stop trying to "improve" things that work well.

Thanks a lot.

Hello,

I was having the same problem while working with a large document; Word kept updating the complete formatting every time I wanted to apply a local change and I had to resort to the same one-level-undo trick until I read your comment. Thanks for the solution, this will save me quite some time and frustration.

Regards,

Danny Holten.
