microsoft office problem???

hi. i am new here. hope someone can help. i am new to the world of computers so i will try my best to describe this problem. pls bare with me. we use windows xp pro. i recently bought a new printer. a canon pixma mp500. i installed the new software that came with it. now, when ever my son or wife log into one of their accounts (we have three on this computer...one for me, one for my wife and one for my son) a box appears on the screen that says "windows installer" is preparing to install. it does not say what. then it shows an error. this happens every time either of them logs on. it does not do it on my account. i should also say that the same "windows installer" box appears on their accounts whenever they try to open any pictures. the only difference is that if they click "cancel", the box will close and then the pics will open. i always thought it must have been a problem with the initial installation of the office programs, but why would it work for me??? hope someone has an answer. thx. rick

hi. i`ll try to be brief. here is what happens step by step....
log on to wife or sons acct-box opens in mid screen-says "windows installer" in top left corner-says "cancel" in lower right corner-says "preparing to install..." inside box-if you do nothing and wait about a minute the box then says "please wait while windows configures microsoft office proffessioal 2003" as well as saying "gathering required information"-the bar graph in bottom of box lights up about half way-after short time another box opens over top-says "error 1309 error reading from file"-it shows a big number like this....
{20D04FED-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}./Y1561401.CAB
and also says "verify that the file exists and that you can access it"
if we try to open a picture from a "my documents" file it starts with the same box opening like described above but instead of the same error box opening after a minute, it opens a different box saying "file Y1561401.CAB cannot be found" (part of code above).this box also has one of those "browse" buttons in it. but if you simply click the cancel button, the boxes go away and the pics open.
this is the best desription i can give. hope you can help. thx in advance. rick

http://www.5starsupport.com/ipboard/lofiversion/index.php?t1386.html is just one of a few discussions about this cab file. It appears this is not a valid file on the Microsoft Office CD (I looked at mine too.)

To fix this I would uninstall Office completely and try again. I might use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility after the uninstall to clean up any Office item it finds.

hi. thx for the suggestion. i would have tried that but unfortunately had the office 2003 installed by a person who had to repair my computer once. so i do not have the disc. he has moved away. maybe i can find someone else who could lend me theirs.
it is strange however that is does not act up when i use my acct ??? thx rick

Sorry but discussions are not allowed on "borrowed" copies of Office.

Feel free to install Open Office from http://www.openoffice.org

-> I do know of a "cracked" Office that the owner ran into that file, but since it's a pirate copy there is nothing we can discuss here.

Three things that spring to mind:
1. Create a new account (for your non-existing daughter for example) and see if the same happens.
2. Install the printer (or better said, the "other software") again in their accounts. It's unlikely the installation of a printer does have this effect (not with my Pixma, in any case), but it could be the other software (what software is it, and do you need it?).
3. Uninstall the "other software" and see if that makes a difference.

And can you explain why you think this is a MS Office problem, as your subject line reads? There's really nothing in your story that mentions MS Office.

And what software do you mean when you talk about "open a picture". Could be MS Paint, Irfanview, Internet Explorer, MS PHoto Editor and a host of other programs. Might even be one of the programs that came with the Canon. That points to a relation.

And one more question: do your wife's and sons account have administrator capabilities? Or are they limited users?

Hope this helps.

hi. thx for writing.when they open pictures, the program opening them is the office 2003 picture manager. maybe it is not related but i`m not sure.it is still a problem for us though.
my account, my wife`s account are both admin accts.
my sons is a limited user.
i did try to reinstall the canon software again yesterday. it did not change anything. i will try and reinstall it on my wifes acct and see what that does. rick
