Let's assume that Compaq paid the license fee to Microsoft, and didn't pirate the software.
But to be on the safe site, ask the vendor to take back the upgrade and sell you the full version if the upgrade refuses to be installed. Any reasonable vendor will do so, if only because he makes more money from the full version.
Btw, are you sure you mean 3000, not 2003? But if you've got the box it doesn't really matter.

I have a Compaq Presario running Windows XP Home version. It came with Works 7.0 installed on the computer. I need to purchase Microsoft Office Pro 3000 but cannot get a straigt answer as to whether I can purchase the update version $329 or have to get the full version $499. It says on the update box that if I have a "Licensed" version of Works I am eligible for the upgrade. Can someone give me a definitive answer. Need to know before 9pm CST>
