Microsoft Office 97

Apr 5, 2005 4:35AM PDT

I have a copy of Office 97 Professional edition which has Access on it. When I loaded this into my former computer which had Windows 2000, it came right up for me. Now that I have a newer computer with XP, I cannot load Access - it tells me it is unlicensed for my current computer. Anything I can do to get Access to perform on my newer computer?

Re: Access 97 on Windows XP

Searchkid,

Office 97 is unsupported on Windows XP. Most programs mostly run. That MS Access wouldn't run at is surprising for me (although I
ve never done it). But if you go and ask Microsoft about it the answer will be it's not supported.

Count your blessings and find an Office 2000, XP, 2002 or 2003 CD.

Just sharing.
Apr 5, 2005 5:45AM PDT

I think I know the fix, but can't remember it since your post doesn't share "the error message." But the fix is easy to find if it's "the error message" I'm thinking of. Just use google.com and "the error message."

I'm imploring you to think before you post and make a better post next time so others can help you.

If it never works out, the new Open Office from http://www.openoffice.org includes a database.

How did you make Office 97 run fine on XP?
Apr 6, 2005 10:17PM PDT

1. When you install 97, Word claims the file is in use by someone and asks to make a copy. How is that fixed?

2. The spellcheck fails. I haven't found a cause or cure.

3. Access seems to corrupt databases on some setups. Again, it seems broken with no patch.

Please supply links on how you worked these issues.

Word Problem
Apr 9, 2005 1:56PM PDT

I had the problem you describe with Word also. I changed the compatibility to Win 95 in the properties dialog box and it went away.

Then I went to microsoft.com and did a two step upgrade. I think they're called SR1 and SR2. I don't know which one fixed the problem because I installed them both one after the other, but I switched compatibility off and no longer get the message about multiple users.

Hope that helps,
Eric

Error message in MS Office 97
Apr 10, 2005 3:13AM PDT

I have a very similar problem but not with Windows XP. I have been using MS Office 97 on Windows 98 for several years without any problem. Recently I had to change my hard disk (the old one got several bad sectors and had to be discarded). I reinstalled the OS (windows 9Cool and MS Office 97 from the original CDs (I own original versions). Now when I launch MS Access it gives the message that 'MS Access can not be opened as there is no license for it on this machine'. How do I solve this?

What is the error message?
Apr 10, 2005 3:23AM PDT

I thought it reported:

"Microsoft Access can't start because there is no license for it on this machine."

See this link -> http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q141373 for a possible cure.

However I wonder if your message indicates a different problem. Feel free to have typographical errors anywhere in your post, but get the error message spot on please.

Thank you for a very prompt response. You are right about the error message. It is as you said...
"Microsoft Access can't start because there is no license for it on this machine." I am sorry I did not note it down correctly resulting in avoidable inconvenience to you.

The link you suggested will really be useful.
