I thought twice about commenting on this one, but given I am geopolitically close to Cambridge, MA I think I know this issue and will comment on it.
There are a few that have great ideas such as Dan Geer, but may be too disruptive in a company that is using those very products that he wrote about.
Its a very fine line to walk to keep your job and continue with your ideas. Dan Geer may have pushed this too hard and may have engaged in one too many "OS Wars" that fueled many columns in the past.
On the other side of the street is Richard Stallman (RS)which is not only very close to the issue but also supplies solutions outside of the usual suppliers. RS not only points out problems such as these, but does something about it.

Dan Geer lost his job, but gained his audience. The very idea that got the computer security expert fired has sparked serious debate in information technology. The idea, borrowed from biology, is that Microsoft Corp. has nurtured a software "monoculture" that threatens global computer security.
Geer and others believe Microsoft's software is so dangerously pervasive that a virus capable of exploiting even a single flaw in its operating systems could wreak havoc.
