General discussion

Microsoft Installer keeps popping on screen.

Feb 1, 2009 11:32AM PST

This is related to the MSOCache and Office 2003. I do not have MS Office, so no CD to re-install. There is a trial version HP put on my computer and that has a repair application. I try to use it and it says "another installation is already in progress". I follow that and the installer cannot find the MSOCache. It gives a very long path: 'C:\MSOCache\All Users\90000409-6000-11DE3-8CFE-0150048383C9\STD11N.MSI' CANNOT BE FOUND. Verify you have access to this location and try again. I am on a merry-go-round. Microsoft's website on this is technically above my ability to fix.

Just what I use.

The Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility you find with a search engine can remove that pending install. This is not an offer to write a tutorial or step by step but this tool is what I use to remove the pending install.

If the tool is too hard to use, just make a note of it for your support staff so they can make quick work of the issue.

My support staff?

I wish I could post a happy face, it made me laugh. No support staff. No network. I do appreciate the time you took and your help. I will try to find the tool you suggested and use it.
Thank you. Betty

Microsoft Installer Cleanup Utility

I found the Installer Cleanup Utility and downloaded from Microsoft. I cannot install it because "another installation is in progress". Is there any way out of this cycle?

I followed the link and downloaded the latest version.

It was a hotfix listed as a 4.5 Installer. Since the download, the installer is not popping up every 3 minutes. It seems to happen when I go to email for a new post. I tried following the instructions given going into Start> Run> %temp% but with no installer cleanup utility I was afraid to delete anything. Would if just be simpler to do a Restoration? This is just one of the problems I have. I bought an external drive and Acronis thanks to some good advice on other forums. Acronis is a little complicated for me, but it did save a trip to the repair shop before. Thank you again for your effort with this problem.

Another solution, maybe.

For anyone else in this mess: I went into a program I already had named Win Patrol. I was there to look at cookies and saw "File Types." The Windows Installer was there and I clicked on it and clicked "Kill Task." So far, no pop ups. I don't know if it would have worked without the update link R. Proffitt found for me. I still can't fix MSOCache and do not know if I need it or not. I hope Scottie helps someone without spending 3 days on the problem.
