Microsoft FTP link.

1. If you're willing, access the MSKB article, "Q316639."

2. Find the paragraph indicated below in the above reference (do not use the hot-link referenced below), click the link shown there, and let me know the result (regardless of what you do about the download -- if any) :

"To obtain a text file of the Windows XP HCL, visit the following Microsoft FTP site:"

ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/services/whql/hcl/winxphclx86.txt

3. Does this actually function, or is a The page cannot be displayed (at the page top) / Cannot find server or DNS Error (at the page bottom) rendered?

Win98/MSIEv5.01SP2

1. Your error may be explained in MSKB article, "Q318380" under the paragraph "4xx - Transient Negative Completion Reply."

2. Course, it could simple be the use of Mozilla 1.5b.

3. Doing a lot of research now that bob b can with IEv6.x. The basic default installation of IEv5.x certainly should, supposedly without any bells and whistles to help -- you would think.

Thanks.

Seems to work for me.
File size is about 4.6MB
Start out looking like below.

Why'd you have to say that?
Dec 18, 2003 12:47AM PST

1. The closest I've gotten yet is to enter ftp://ftp.microsoft.com/ in the Address bar, and then press Enter.

2. Double-clicking the folders, "Services", "whql", "HCL", and then "winxphclx86.txt", the same darn error message is then rendered.

Thanks.

Bill, Unusual Results Here...
Dec 18, 2003 1:12AM PST

I tried on two different computers, a Win95 with Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 and a WinXP with IE 6 SP1. Both are on the same T1 line.

On the Win95 machine, I get "No joy":
The page cannot be displayed (at the page top) / Cannot find server or DNS Error (at the page bottom)

On the WinXP with IE6, I am able to read and download the page correctly.

Hope this helps.

Hi Bill,

It works fine BUT there does seem to be a sporadic problem with the server being inordinately slow. The slow responses cause a dropped connection and thus the message. At other times it comes up rather quickly.

It is a 4.43 meg text file and your browser tries to download and render the text when you click on the link.

If you want it holler and I'll make it more readily available for you.

NT - Gesture appreciated, but wanted to determine if that WAS a bad link.
