Resolved Question

Microsoft Excel

Aug 11, 2013 1:45AM PDT

A friend of mine purchased a new laptop from Best Buy and installed Excel in it. She said it cost her $300 online. The new laptop turned out to be defective and she returned it for an exchange. She wants to reinstall Excel in the new laptop but for some reason she say's she can't get it to install. I'm thinking that she purchased the license for one computer and that's why she can't install it. Is that true? If so can we transfer the license? She has all the key codes and it won't install. Thanks...Digger....P.S . This is a Win 7 os

Clarification Request
Please define "won't install" - error msg?
Aug 11, 2013 2:05AM PDT

It's not clear what you mean by "won't install". Does she get the setup screen when she inserts the disc? Does she get an error message? What is the exact error message? If she gets an error msg, there should be a phone no. she can call to get it activated. I just went through this procedure with a Windows 8 installation after a mobo had to be replaced, so I know it works.

Sorry but it's complicated.

I can't tell exactly what Excel that was so I can't guess much. (Hi Digger!)

My advice is to tell them to try LibreOffice next and when it comes to activation and install issues, it's almost always a call to MSFT.

Hi Bob

my friend with this issue works for us at the American Legion as our building and office manager and we have Microsoft Office 2010 installed on our computers. She wants to be able to do work at home on her computer and put it on a flash drive and bring it to the legion and and transfer the work on our computers. If I installed LibreOffice on her computer would that be compatible with MS Office ?

Very compatible.

Thank you for your time. I'll try to work it out with MS and if I can't resolve the issue I'll just install LibreOffice and give it a shot. Off to the office I go. Have a good one ...Digger

She should, if she owns the license, be able to do accomplish that via Microsoft's automated phone system. Best Buy might be able to assist her with this, it is certainly worth a shot.

with Best Buy and no go with them. They just said it's not their problem. I will be calling MS.

That's strange, paying 300 dollar for Excel when Microsoft sells 2013 version of the whole suite (Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote ) for $139.99 for home use, as shown on http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/store-FX102759646.aspx

If she prefers the 2010 version, that would have been 174.43 at Amazon for the whole suite: http://www.amazon.com/Microsoft-Office-Home-Student-2010/dp/B00337D8U6/ref=sr_1_2?s=software&ie=UTF8&qid=1376390104&sr=1-2&keywords=office+2010

So that #300 really is very high. Let's hope you can get it installed again. It's difficult to say anything sensible about it when you only told "for some reason she can't get it installed".

I told her she really got ripped off if she paid that much . She said "well it's the professional suite" so I dunno. I thought when you ordered from MS they actually sent you the disc's so something isn't making sense . I do see a 2013 pro suite at the MS site for $399 . Well, we'll find out when she brings me the laptop , we're not psychic's . I'll let you know the rest of the story soon......Digger
