Microsoft Antispyware Update Problem?

Dec 30, 2005 7:40AM PST

Hi All,

Roddy has been kind enough to alert me to new MSAS definitions and I of course upgraded and here is what I see when I say HELP ABOUT:

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.701
This version expires on: 7/31/2006
Spyware Definition Version: 5789 (12/30/2005 6:29:37 PM)

Product ID: 76831-000-0000012-00123

OK everything looks good right? When I go back to FILE Check for Updates, it starts the download again as if it never happened, what is going on?

YES I also have automatic Updates in place.

Anyone else having this problem?

Thanks,

Steve

Steve.. from all that I've seen..

and read, an inordinate amount of people were having the same problem with the last update to #5787. At least you got that one!

With this most recent update, I would suspect the servers are espcially overloaded. Give it some time. (Easy for me to say.. I lucked out this morning!)

You're not alone, if it makes you feel any better. You should eventually get it.

My 2 cents..
Carol

I'm stuck on even an earlier update 5785. I never got the 5787 OR the 5789 even though the program TELLS me it is installed. The proper way to check for this on is.

MSAS >Help >About. Click Diagnostic button. You should see below info:
Definitions Increment Version: 142/142

As Carol says, the servers are overloaded but this has been an ongoing problem since they started this program which is one reason why it is still in Beta. I suspect that there are many people that don't even realize that they have a problem because once the program says the updates were installed, they forget about it until the next update. Usually within the next day or 2 the automatic updater will give you the correct ones but in MY case, it usually takes 2-3 days whether I let the automatic updater do it or if I do them manually. If you check the Microsoft newsgroups, you'll see that it is an extremely common problem. I don't have that link at my fingertips but Carol probably has it. Happy

It seemed strange as you say you were "stuck on 5785/5787" & my diagnostics said different things everytime I opened it.

So Just for fun I UNINSTALLED MSAS and re-installed from the beta page. WOW now the defintions were 5773, so I upgraded & got 5789 like I did before, but that wasn't true, when I did Diagnostics I got 126/142. When I did the check updates again, it again upgraded to 5789. VERY weird, so just for the heck of it, I came up in safe mode with networking, I did the check for update AGAIN and now I have the 5789 installed Diagnostics 142/142.

Very strange indeed.

If I don't speak to you I hope 2006 finds you in better health than 2005!!!

Glad you got the right ones now

Steve. I have tried every workaround that is out there including uninstall-reinstall and many others. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. I finally gave up trying because eventually I WILL get the correct ones. BTW, This program has NEVER found anything on my computer during a scan BUT it pops up whenever I'm installing something so I know the real time protection is working which is why I keep it.

Thanks for the well wishes. Unfortunately my health will never get much better than it is but as long as it doesn't get worse I will be happy. Best wishes for you too Steve.

Guess I got lucky....

Did a manual update at 2:36PM EST and got the new update.
Mine shows 5789 and 142/142
For some reason I haven't had any problems for a long time, but I do mine manually rather than wait for several days.

Hi Larry,

Must be my computer, I did the update, said it INSTALLED the new definitions, 10 seconds later, checked the update again, it upgraded my definitions again to the same version it said it had just installed UNTIL I went to "safe mode" with networking & did the same install again, then it took, as yours did, really weird!!

Hi Steve...

I did have the problem, when I first downloaded MSAS when it first came out. Since it never found anything, I just let it update when it got ready. It finally started to work OK. Go Figure? Just remember it is Beta.
Anyway I have it set to run every Friday night at 9:00PM.
I don't worry much about MSAS as I have too many other Programs I like better.

this is not a new problem

i do not think they have written the 'no new updates are available' code, yet.

if you get the new update version then that is all you have to worry about.

As Roddy says this is Beta and this version is good till July next year.

Personally I want them to make MSAS as strong as possible, as a real time scanner.

The updater should be simple to do because it is something that all AV's have and the code i suspect is not that difficult to write.

Microsoft Antispyware....
Dec 30, 2005 9:11AM PST

Hi Steve.. I use the same anti spyware... perhaps you did not completely down load the program, because I do not have that problem.. this is the 2nd time around for me with this beta.... when I want to do a scan, I have to go through a menu which I have to click nexr, next, next... in this menu, it will automatically do updates before I do a scan... I have a scheduled scan, but when I am done with my puter, I turn it off, so updates cannot take place until I ask for the scan.. maybe go to add/romvoe and remove it, then reinstall it.. go to the microsoft site, and type in antispyware.. choose beta.. hope I was of help... good luck.. this site has cleaned lots of "crap"from my puter... worth having for sure... Will track your conversation... Lennie

I'm fine, as Roddy stated this program has NEVER found anything on my system either (I am happy about that!) It was just strange that it took "Safe Mode" to get the newest definitions finally installed, actually the problem was NOT getting the new defintions, it was for MSAS to realize the new definitions had been downloaded & installed even though the HELP/ABOUT & Diagonstics said they had been.

Thanks,
Steve
