and if you haven't uninstalled MS Messenger on your XP system because you use it for instant messenging, it is going to run in the background looking for its own updates.....
The spyware program knows that the product belongs to MS so it will allow the popup and then allow the messenger program to continue scanning for updates for whatever interval it is defaulting to (in your case every ten or fifteen minutes).
You can either take Messenger out of the startup program completely and tell OE to turn it off in the Options/Security area because as it checks your mail, it will continue to keep messenger running in the background as well or turning it back on everytime OE checks for your email......or you can uninstall it from Add-Remove programs by making a small change in the .ini file that will let it show up there for removal.
If you disable messenger from startup and from OE, you can continue to use the program on an 'as needed' basis by using the shortcut to it in Start/Programs and only start it up when you want to use the program.
Either way, the spyware program will then stop telling you about it......
TONI
I am using Windows XP Home Edition and have SP2 installed.
Ever since I installed the beta Microsoft Antispyware program a few weeks ago, the following pop-up constantly continues to appear on my screen about every 10 to 15 minutes and then slowly slides off of the screen.
There is no plain English explanation as to what it's purpose is, nor is there any way offered for me to stop it from continually appearing.
If it HAS actually allowed something to be installed in my startup registry, then why does it keep coming up over and over and over again telling me that it is NOW BEING installed??.
Is it installing it and uninstalling it and installing it and uninstalling it and installing it and uninstalling it, etc., etc., etc.??
There is no help link on the pop-up.
The pop-up reads as follows:
"Microsoft Antispyware Notice
An Application Change has been Allowed
Microsoft Antispyware has allowed the startup program Messenger by Microsoft Corporation to be installed in your startup registry.
Name: Messenger
File path:c:\program files\messenger\msmsgs.exe
The program is known to be spyware free.
Click here about more information about this..."
After I click the above link, a new pop-up window appears, which reads:
"Microsoft Antispyware Help
Mucrosoft Antispyware Help
The requested information is not currently available."
Does anyone out there know for certain in PLAIN ENGLISH:
(A) Exactly what the pop-up is repeatedly trying to convey to me???
(B) Since it states that it has installed something, what exactly has it installed, and for what purpose??
(C) And finally, if it actually DID install it, why does it continue to pop up again and again and again, every day, every session, every 10-15 minutes. to tell me that it is NOW installing it??
Thank you.
