Microphone recording issues?

by frontflips / September 30, 2016 1:27 PM PDT

Hello, today I got a Behringer XM8500 and a Female XLR to 3.5mm cable today and hooked it up to my computer with the intention of using it to talk to people on skype or teamspeak.
The first issue was that it was incredibly quiet, and only with the mic boosted on my Realtek drivers to the max and the recording volume to the max could you even hear the mic.
This isn't a big problem though as I can just have it near me - it picks up fine on Audacity so I know the mic is definitely functional.
However, when testing it on Teamspeak I can't hear my voice AT ALL, and Discord my voice is nonexistent there too.
All my drivers are fully updated, I feel like i'm just doing something stupid. Can anyone help? Thanks

Guys, I have behringer XM8500 connected to my ASUS Xonar D2X Sound Card, the recording is too low though I put it to the Maximum in settings.Any hint?
This type of microphone requires a "pre-amp". Most mixing boards have these built in to the mic channels but since you are going direct to computer without first going through a mixer you'll need to buy a standalone preamp of some sort.

Where's your pre-amp?

That's excellent, thanks for that. Knew it was something simple like that but had no idea.
Can I get any pre-amp or is it something more specific than that?

Preamps seem relatively cheap at like 20-30$, I think i'd be further out of pocket if I had to return the mic and get one of those $100 blue yetis. Thanks for figuring out the problem though

You can return them if it doesn't work out. I own a set of Behringer mics but we run them into a XLR recorder.

If that doesn't work out, there's item #3 on the link I gave.

I write and record music and have marked #3 as an item of interest to me. I might give it a go in the near future.
