Question

Microphone background noise

Feb 21, 2014 9:04AM PST

When I am in a steam voice chat with my friends, they often complain that there is a lot of background noise on my end. I investigated this by turning my mic on so that I could hear it, and seeing what was the problem. The main problem is my computer fans, my desktop is on the same level as my webcam, which is recording the sound. Also, my keyboard is pretty loud, as it is a mechanical gaming keyboard. I was wondering if there was any software that would allow me to take away the background noise before sending the sound to my friends. My computer is pretty high end, so it would be able to handle anything no problem. Are there any programs that will suit my needs?

Answer
(NT) Ever consider those USB headphone/mic setups?

Well, yes

That will change the level of the input, but you still get the fan noise. It shouldn't be that hard to take something out that has a constant level, and doesn't change.

Noise cancelling headset
Feb 22, 2014 12:34AM PST

As Bob Proffitt stated, get an external USB headset with noise cancelling capability, there are many on the market. Take a look on Amazon, there are several manufacturers. I have two such sets made by Logitech...The built in mic set up in L/T's is not worth bothering with for such as Skype, VOIP or speech recognition.

Let's read that again.

1. "It shouldn't be too hard"
That means that you will find this soon.

2. "fan noise" etc.
My son used to have a desktop with fans that were noisy. Over time we improved that and the headset with the mic in front of the mouth design worked great. I can't guess how loud your fans are but are they so loud you need ear protection?
