Question

Micosof Edge Browser

May 18, 2016 10:51AM PDT

I like to use Chrome and Firefox. By accident I opened Edge and Microsoft won't let me get back to my other browsers.
Even when I click at Firefox or Chrome at opening manually "set as default", it wont work.
I really don't like to be forced to use another browser that came with Window 10, which by the way is really great.
Any solution?

So you click on the Firefox or Chrome icon and you get Edge? Then better make a new shortcut.

When I click on "set as default", it won't set. When ever I click a link in a mail like the one from Cnet, it goes automatically to Edge instead of Chrome I want to have as default browser.

When open Chrome, there is the message bar:
Google Chrome isn't your default browser "Set as default" "Don't ask again"
At clicking "Set as default" still Edge will work as default. The same with Firefox. selecting it as default browser it doesn't work. Edge will be always the default browser. Seems like I have to live with it. I hate it to be forced to something!!

So the Windows setting doens't work?

Does it work for other programs, for example to switch between Wordpad and Notepad as default text editor?

Have you?

Gone to settings>system>default apps and changed it there.

Yes, I did. Still Edge comes up as default.
I will reinstall Windows 10 and hope for the best.
Thank you all for your great advise. It is a nice forum!!!!

They would change the default then click on the Edge icon. Yup, Edge would come up.

Are you starting IE or Edge?

Just wondering.

You click on a link in a mail and up comes Edge. What mail program do you use? You didn't tell.

- If it's the Windows 10 mail app, maybe that uses Edge hard coded in stead of following the system settings. Or maybe it has its own setting.
- If you happen to use Thunderbird (many people do), http://kb.mozillazine.org/Changing_the_web_browser_invoked_by_Thunderbird to says it should use the system default, but it gives both a setting to change the default and an add-on to choose the program with each link.

The best way to test if the default setting works is to make a URL link on the desktop and click that. That's pure Windows and it should obey your settings. Any program in between can have its own settings or do what it likes better.

The default program doesn't work and it looks like I have to live with it. It works with non of the other programs trying to set as default. May be reinstalling Windows 10 will help. But I can live with the little problem.
So, we won't clutter here and let's end the discussion.
THANKS ALL FOR YOUR HELP!!
