Canopus.com. They have a variety of analog-to-digital converters that are excellent. They are strictly a hardware box so you don't need to worry about incompatible software. Of course, you will need a Firewire card on your computer and video editing software to accept the download. At work, I use the Canopus ADVC-55 and at home I use the ADVC-100. The big difference is that the 100 (now replaced with the model 110) allows you to send the DV file back to a camcorder tape, whereas the model 55 is a one-way device. I have my Canopus converter hooked up permanently to my Mac along with a VHS deck. I orignally bought the device to download all of my old 8mm tapes into the computer for editing. The other option is to simply buy a tabletop DVD burner. It won't give you any editing function, but it will allow you to get your 8mm to DVD.
Does anyone know if there is a converter OTHER than a digital camcorder, that will convert my 8mm tapes to digital? I know some of the digital camcorders will convert analog, but I really like my top-quality Hi8mm camcorder and didn't want to buy a lower quality digital camcorder. Thanks.
