On the topic some have discussed on the internet about metering bandwidth use (billing according to how much bandwidth you use for everyone) :
What everyone has failed to mention is the fact that unlike electricity use and cell phone use which is "metered", using the net has one feature which would make it absurd to meter use- people get tons of huge spyware in their computer and this spyware will spend most of it's time downloading tons of junk into the unsuspecting persons computer hence sucking up your monthly allottment of bandwidth. In light of this unmentioned fact of internet use, would it then even be practical to meter & thus limit anyone's bandwidth just to have it all used up by a spyware infection? I for one would refuse to pay for bandwidth spyware sucked up.
I recently left Comcast this same complaint since they're looking into metering according to bandwidth use. It's completely funny to even suggest that electricity being metered is the "same" as metering internet use- it's not the same as electrical use, has anyone ever heard of tons of electricity being used up by an infection of spyware and then being expected to pay for the electricity you never even used yourself? No one can claim this. Metering bandwidth would be realisitic IF spyware would never infect anyones computer and then suck up all the bandwidth you subscibed to, but since they haven't found a way to keep spyware out of peoples computers it would then be absurd to expect anyone to pay for bandwidth for a month when some spyware had sucked up most of it (and sometimes ALL).
Seems everyone who supports metering bandwidth has forgetten this fact- just one nasty spyware in your computer will suck up the entire months bandwidth use people subscribe to- what are people supposed to do then? Pay for some spyware to "have fun" on their bandwidth? This whole idea is ridiculous.
If/when anyone can guarentee **no spyware infections** maybe then they can talk metering according to bandwidth use. As I said, I for one refuse to pay for some spyware which sucked up my entire months bandwidth use (and worse yet, this will happen over & over since infections in a years time are common). What a rip off of the customers money I say, no way would I pay for some hacker to have fun in my computer and neither should YOU.
If you hear news of any ISP thinking of billing according to bandwidth use, object by sending email as I have; maybe then they'll see what a crazy and unfair billing idea this would be.
