Messenger connection Win XP and Win 98se audio?

Nov 29, 2004 5:32AM PST

When attempting an audio conversation in MSN Messenger 6.2 with a friend who is running Win98se, she hears me clearly, but I receive fractured speech from her end. However, all runs well if I use my other networked pc, which runs Win98se. I gather there is an issue in communication between these two OS's? Any comments, or a fix, please?

I know of no cure since MS seems to be pushing for XP to XP communications.

Have you looked at SKYPE?

Skype minimum req. Win 2000 or XP, Bob.
Nov 29, 2004 8:43AM PST

Bob, thanks for the tip, Skype appeals, but they state that the minimum system requirement is Win 2000 or XP. That then precludes Win 98se, unfortunately. Another instance of alienating those users who, for whatever reason, run Win 98se!

Skype FAQ shows hope.

"Can I use Skype with Windows 98 or Windows ME?
Because it hasn?t been fully tested, we have not yet certified Skype for use with these operating systems. Skype may work with Windows 98 or ME but we cannot yet guarantee compatibility. Some WinME/9x video (and possibly other) drivers tend to use 100% of processor for their needs for relatively long periods of time. This can cause the audio quality to degrade significantly. In addition, WinME/9x does not offer full unicode support, which means that some things may not display properly. Skype does not work on WinNT at the moment. We may support these platforms in the future and will make any future announcements on our website."

I'd try it. But in there lies your clue why Windows 98/ME is cracking up.

Thanks Bob, I'll investigate her video drivers and look for a possible update; as you said, the card may be throttling CPU bandwidth. I will let you know the outcome when we test it.
