#Oh, and about 3 years ago, there were placeholder fora in ZDNET, but I didn't make posts into them!#
and now, after seeing how pissed off your friend lee koo was you decide to let us know how clever you are?
surely a private email to him would have served the purpose better...
frankly, for someone who has perfected the "sack cloth and ashes-look at me i am SE personified-i was here when methusalah was banned-death and dishonour before disgracing SE" look, it amazes me that you posted that list.....
haste trims the wings of caution
Ian,
Posts like this of yours, which seem to encourage infighting here, and which seem to show defiance for the management of these forums, create the kind of atmosphere that keeps me (and I'm sure many others who used to be regular) from participating more in the forum.
I don't think the number of posts in a forum is anything to brag about if it is dominated by animosity.
It turns the forum into a childish war zone instead of a place for material discussions.
You are not the only one to do this, but the only one who does that I have enough respect for to speak my mind.![]()
Paula
The heading I used was irony.
I do not lack respect for the management of ZDNET. I did not despite the management of ZDNET. Nor will I stop using my brain to examine my environment.
If this forum's high post rate is based on animosity - which it has been for several years, well, a lady member recently told me here that jokes were an annoyance, my sense of humour was puerile, and that only the contentious threads were worth reading.
I'm sorry I upset you. I will however review the fora activity three monthly as I have done for some time. I took this up when Chris Faust departed, and the "Top 10 Forums" list got frozen.
Ian
The obsession with statistics notwithstanding, your time would be better spent actually calmly reading posts so as not to misinterpret and subsequently misrepresent that which others have said to you.
Since I am the lady to whom you refer, let's clear this up.
1. I didn't say that jokes were an annoyance. I DID say deluges of jokes, especially with this current forum softward, can be. I enjoy jokes. I think I may have even contributed some. The newer presentation of "bundling" them has been well received by the membership if you take a look.
2. Your sense of humor is peurile? Don't think I ever said that. Learning about some spider game in your defense of an adult male exposing himself to teenage girls was pretty stomach churning though.
3. Only contentious threads are worth reading? Actually, I think more the opposite.
Evie
post statistics for the "official" forums. I see no need to list every possible forum. Your list was rather useless for actually comparing forum statistics because the "real" forums got lost in all the error messages. A list of the official forums ranked in descending sequence by number of posts might be useful. Ranked by number of posts in the last month might be useful...
Speaking only as a member. The opinions expressed are my own.
I had just finished closing escrow on a condo in 1986, having been challenged by a woman who said I'd never "make it" enough to buy any real estate on my own.
Driving back from writer's cramp, that song played on the radio, just for me. Did I sing along? You betcha!
Thanks for the reminder.![]()
Paula
It wasn't 1986, I bought the condo in 1976!
I guess I didn't want to believe it was that long ago!
LOL!
Lee Koo has said in Forum Feedback how the inability to remove a message is an annoyance to him.
My annoyance with it is far less important, but still a relevant fact of reviewing the software.
In the last software situation, comparison of current posts to message numbers gave an indication of deletion rates. Not a total picture, as one could not tell whether it was a deleted duplicate, a deleted on having second thoughts, a deleted because it was unclear and needed to be reposted, deleted by a moderator for breaching the TOS, or deleted by a moderator because it would be meaningless without the stimulating message that had been deleted for breach of the TOS.
It had become apparent that at least several members of SE had begun to feel that SE was more contentious and thus subject to more deletions than other fora. The ability to compare percentage of total posts deleted demonstrated quite clearly that it was not the case, and that in fact some of the technical forums had a greater percentage of posts removed.
As I see it, too much of the current situation is a result of the fora software changeover, so valid review cannot be undertaken in this three month period. It will be interesting to see how the fora compare in the second three months.
Ian
Lee has threatened anyone who messes around in closed areas with banning -- a word to the wise SHOULD be sufficient.

The opinions expressed above are my own,
and do not necessarily reflect those of CNET!
Clay,
The CNet Experts forum has a paragraph devoted to it in http://reviews.cnet.com/4002-7600_7-5082858.html the home page of www.help.com
It even has a html blue click on "Enter the Experts Online Forum".
Puzzled?
The paragraph is separate from the listings for the "interactive help" forums. I'm not sure who is supposed to answer questions in the Expert forum other than Herb Chong (the mod). He's not listed in the forum moderators list (but that may just be an oversight).

Experts forum, and I am far from being a 'expert'.![]()

but didn't want to answer it after the brouhaha about the secret forums. Since there wasn't a link on the main forums page and Herb Chong was not on the CNet mods list, I decided it was supposed to be a private support forum and stayed out.
I looked at Ian and Steve Gargini's post yesterday that is now deleted. All I saw in Ian's post was a list of forums with a number behind them which I assume is the number of post made as of a certain date. That number of posts can be obtained by just clicking on to any forum and it is listed at the top. He did have listed semods4@yahoo.com and Moderator Backroom, is that the "confidential information"?? I didn't see any info of any kind that would hint of a hack capability, company confidential material, or any info that would help getting confidential material out of a forum.
Steve's post didn't give any info at all that I could determine.
Was there something there that maybe a "programmer" or "hacker" could pick up on ??? I couldn't see it.
JR
Lee would prefer to keep everyone out of the "hidden" forums until they're ready. Posting all the details about 100 forums that may or may not exist gives everyone the clues required to figure out the hack for themselves. Call it containment if you will. If you require precedence, Lee nuked the posts in Feedback that explained the hack.
Hmmmm....I didn't see any hidden forums in Ian or Steve's post nor did I see any details of those forums posted other than a number following their title which corresponds to number of post made. Not being a programmer there must be something that cannot 'catch' my eye...eh?![]()
Just in case you didn't have a chance to read it, here is Lee's post in Feedback. He has enough on his plate without worrying about some numbskulls posting garbage in them, just for what they think is "fun". Or a spammer. Arrgh!
*******
Re:NT- Be gentle, it's not their fault. (nor mine...)
James,I know it's not anyones fault--I figure people would find out sooner or later.
I'm really not upset that the forums were discovered, but upset because people decided to graffiti in the clean forums that were meant to be saved for others... and because this software doesn't allow me to delete a message without leaving a history behind (which I think totally bites), it makes a new forum look tainted with "Message has been deleted? as the first post.
I wish people asked me about those forums before posting messages in them...
I know these are just forums, but a level of respect should be considered when it comes to its property...
just because I leave my garage door open, it doesn't mean I'm opening an invitation for anyone to come in and start using my tools without permission does it?
Anyways, I just wanted to make sure no one continues to post in those forums... so please keep in mind that those forums are off limit.
Thanks,
-Lee
