How come the number of spaces between "test", and the number, and "spaces" doesn't change

EX
I type "test"(then I hit the space bar twice) then type "2" (then I hit the space bar twice) then I type "spaces"

Then I repeat and increase the number of times I press the space bar by 1 each time.

When I preview the post, the spaces are all the same.

Hit Preview

It looks like this

test 2 spaces
test 3 spaces
test 4 spaces
test 5 spaces
test 6 spaces

I've noticed that myself . . .

Must be some sort of auto-something. Probably has something to do with the way the page is encoded. I remember from my typing class back in the dark ages that after a period, two spaces are required. But they don't show up here.

That isn't new.

I don't know WHY the software suppresses extra spaces but I'm pretty sure it has been doing so ever since we moved to the current platform a few years back. The only time I ever notice it is when I lose the 2 spaces after every period but I suppose that the suppression of extra spaces does reduce the effectiveness of anybody trying to create artistic posts with careful alignment of various lines.

Indeed...

It's been a 'feature' since at least 2005, one which Lee said may be removed in an upcoming update so that we can actually align text. I have my suspicions as to why it was originally designed like that, but if I'm correct they have a flaw in their design of that as well.
