Message as attachment

A friend using Outlook Express on Win XP sends me emails and attaches nothing to them but when they arrive on my machine (Outlook 2000 on Win 2k) they have a .txt attachment that when scanned and opened is an exact copy of the email he sent.
We have mailed back and forth for years and this has never happened until today. Any ideas how to make it stop?
