Question

Merging hard disk partitions

I installed windows 8.1 on my dell latitude 6400 after uninstalling windows 8 and ubuntu 14.04. Now the ubuntu partition of the hard disk is not getting merged with the disk containing windows 8.1. Due to this there's always an alert stating low disk space and necessary updates are not getting installed. Can anyone suggest remedy for this?

After many back and forth they finally figured out they would never "merge" the two. They did find they could delete the other partition then extend the size of the partition they needed to be bigger. The idea of merge was something from the days of Partition Magic which as far as I know is no more.

In the prior discussion, Windows was not re-installed. My guess is that's the answer from Dell for all issues?

Merge Partitions

Hi kedarterwad,

My name is Pradeep and I work for Dell's Social Media Team.

You need to reinstall windows 8.1 again and delete all the partitions to format ubuntu system files.
You need to back up data before reinstalling windows.

Bear in mind that Ubuntu has a different file system.

I've successfully used the free Easeus Partition Master to merge partitions, but understand that when you install any form of Linux, it uses a different file system. When I did something similar to what you did, I finally ended up formatting my C: drive and reinstalling. IF all your partitions have only had Windows things on them, the Easeus program will allow you to do everything we used to do with the old Partition Magic program.
