Question

memtest86 results - errors

May 4, 2019 1:39PM PDT

Pass couple of days I noticed some minor issues. Ran the memtest86 v8.1. After '4' passes - total errors 42. Test passed 36/48 = 75%. Obviously some issues.

Where do I go from here. Dell PC is 5 years old.

I could copy & paste results if it would be of any help.

Speccy:

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

That's the Speccy we look for. All we need now is for Bob to read it.

I'm getting:

Error Connecting To Publishing Server. Tried copy / paste but that didn't work either.
Maybe issue on my 'end'.

The 503 error came back. Minutes ago I could see the proper Speccy but now the 503. My bet is its on Speccy's end.

Answer
you have unmatched memory modules

Slot #1
Type:
DDR3
Size:
4096 MBytes
Manufacturer:
Hyundai Electronics

Max Bandwidth:
PC3-12800 (800 MHz)
Part Number:

Serial Number:

Week/year:

Slot #2
Type:
DDR3
Size:
4096 MBytes
Manufacturer:
Crucial Technology

Max Bandwidth:
PC3-12800 (800 MHz)
Part Number:

Some chips on at least one board is causing to be underclocked below 800 MHz rating, low as 457 MHz.

Pull one RAM and see what speccy reading you get on your RAM, then do again with only the other RAM. You could also run Memtest86 on each RAM, to find the one causing the problem. My bet would be the Hyundai board for being the problem.

That's a good find.

And a source of nearly impossible to track down issues. I've seen memtest86 to pass even on a week long run yet the mixed ram fails over and over in use.

It may seem like a pain but don't mix.

you would remember...
May 5, 2019 8:46AM PDT

... the days when mixed RAM would work so long as the slowest was in DIMM slot #1, which read it's SPD and set all RAM to that speed. In today's world, even if the same speed, but unmatched, as you stated, it often fails. Hopefully its the Hyundai RAM and he can get by with another stick of Crucial of same part number.

Hyundai 'ram' was original - Dell

And "Crucial" was bought later to raise total ram to 8GB. So best suggestion is to buy 'two' new dimm's. I can do that. Two new Crucial 8GB rams ($50 each) should be good. Wish I could find cheaper, but PC is working fine otherwise, so better than spending $500 on a new computer. Although I saw some 'refubs' for under $150.

Thanks everyone.
