memtest86 problem

Jan 29, 2005 12:18AM PST

Got a problem I haven't seen addressed here. Downloaded memtest86 (Ver. 3.2) and extracted. Double-clicked on install.bat and the window comes up asking me to enter the target diskette drive. All normal so far. I enter "A" and hit <enter>, it asks for formatted diskette, which I insert, and press <enter>. Immediately get following message: "Can't figure out how many sectors/track for this diskette. Installation failed!"
"press any key to continue". There's no activity light on the floppy drive through all this. Has anyone else encountered this problem? I'd really like to use the utility. Thanks for your help.

Thanks, Bob. After perusing all the stuff at that link, I decided to try making the floppy in Safe Mode. Worked fine! Can you tell me why?

Possibly a driver.

Many programs install a "filter driver" on diskettes, CDRW, DVDRW and in the normal mode will interfere with such. While one could rip out the upper and lower filters, your workaround is best.
