As to the memory retainer issue, only the top 2 percent of technicians that own and use solder irons might be able to fix that. In fact the more I think about it, I'm going to write ONE in ONE HUNDRED techs. I'm not saying the other 99 are terrible but just like a brain surgeon you won't find them in an emergency room (ie, your usual PC repair shop.)
So go with the name for memory and just use your retainer method to avoid a dead machine.

I have an 4 year old Gateway 3550GZ laptop that runs very well, but with only 512MB RAM (on motherboard) it could use more. I can add a 1GB SODIMM memory module for under $50 from various manufacturers. Two questions:
1. They offer both a 333MHz and a 400MHz for the same price for my model Gateway. Does it matter which I chose?
2. I broke off the memory module retaining clips a while ago so I need to find a way to keep the module in place. I'm thinking small rubber washers between it and the memory bay cover so once the cover is screwed down the memory module is held in place. Any better idea?
