memory upgrade for dell 4600

My dell running windows xp had two 256 mem mod installed from dell I added 2 - 1 gig mods in the 2 spare slots, when I check the mem available it tells me there is only 1.5 gb. What should i look for

It can be proper for some machines and some sticks of ram. Next time, use crucial.com.

Thanks I did use crucial.com and their scan said I could max out at 8gb, I just used dell to purchase the memory. I had a credit with them and the mods were a cheaper.

When I right click on my computer and property it tells me there is only 1.5 GBs available. I wonder if I should seek an upgrade of the BIOS or would it work if I installed the 2 new 1 GB mods in the first two ports and moved the 2-256 mods to slots3 & 4. Is that do-able or not.

Links please to your machine's documentation. It could be video memory, it could be you didn't get the pairs right.

As to the BIOS, I like to see what's there. Windows can liet about the RAM.
