Memory loss....!

Hello every one - I have bought a new mp4 player "sony" of 4GB when i check the memory on my PC it shows 3.99GB empty, but i can only copy 250mb of songs, I can copy more songs than that,but those songs will not be played, the i-pod will get restarted.. can any1 help me out please?? if I upgrade the firmware,this problem will be solved???

Sony doesn't make the i-pod.
