Memory in Mac

Sep 20, 2006 1:09AM PDT

I am considering buying a Mac for the first time, and have a question about the amount of memory. Most Macs seem to have 512 Meg of memory as a standard amount. Would anyone recommend getting 1 Gig or more to improve performance?

Yes. Today I consider 1G to be the right place to be.

If you don't get it from Apple, look at crucial.com

Concider 1G to be the right place to go

Bob, Nice info. I currently have 1G on my G4 and 1G on my Mac Mini at work. My co-worker that has a Mac Mini Dual has also 1Gig.
We both work with Adobe Photoshop and 1G is what is needed in that App. Pretty good computer for such a low price. Works for us. Works for thousands also. Thanks to Steve Jobs and his wisdom.
Try the Mac Mini Dual. Bob, you will be amazed at what performance for only $699.

Thanks Bob, always nice to get the info from you first and foremost.

As opposed to getting it from someone else? Still trying to start a riot?

I wonder if there is a difference in the way that the two Mac Mini's cope with Photoshop.
One is the original Mini which is able to run Photoshop natively while the other, which apparently is a Core Duo, not DUAL as stated, is running Photoshop under Rosetta. Possibly the difference is taken up with the faster processor in the Intel Mac Mini.

You my Guardian Angel or what?

you could be right about the speed taking up the slack.

No, not your guardian angel, just an interested observer of a certain persons behavior.

Memory

Only the Mac Mini and the low end iMac come with 512MB of RAM.
The remainder come with at least 1GB as standard.

As has often been quoted, get as much RAM as you can afford, with certain caveats, you can never have too much RAM.

More RAM is the least expensive way to maximize your machine's performance.

Actually...

That may be true for desktops (not sure), but when I bought my MacBook in August, it came standard with 512MB of RAM. (upgraded to 1GB, very happy with it)

Upgrading to 1G is recommended by many. Also for the Mac Mini. Both are good machines (as I call them)
Many snub their nose at the Mac Mini. Unfortunately, many do not have it and actually to try it out in the first place. Many rely on news stories.
The Dual Core Mac Mini, also known as the Mac Mini Duo will out-perform many machines out there today as well as your MacBook will out-perfom other lap tops.
Upgrade to more memory to one gig. That's the way to go.
Memory is inexpensive to purchase.
Try buy.com or any place else that you choose.

Dizdi, thanks for posting on the mac Forum that is open to all.

what are doing?
Sep 22, 2006 12:06AM PDT

if you serfing the web or feeding you iPod music then 512 might be enough. But if you want to play back video then I think a gig is minimal. now if you making video then get as much as you can. 2 gig min.

I agree....

All depends on what you want to do on the Mac.
General surfing and email with a bit of music downloading and that type of usage, 512Mb is plenty. But thinking of the future go for 1Gb, was not long ago 128Mb was plenty! (and 10 years ago 16Mb was awesome!!!!)

And you had to buy it at 4-megs at a time.
Thank God those days are over with.
My last purchase over a year ago for 512mb was about $74.
How times have changed.
You really do need 2-gigs, minimum to do Video and other high-end apps. One gig is needed for Adobe Photoshop.
The more the better.

Some of our members here do video. Kiddpeat and grim. Post to them on the Graphics Forum. They will be happy to advise you .

Good guys and will help you with Video and Graphics questions.
You can also ask Bob Proffitt on the Graphic's Forum.
Bob Proffitt is also the Mod on that Forum as well as here.
Very good forum.
