Memory Card Problem - Where are my photos? Help!

Mar 22, 2005 10:22PM PST

hello all - i am hoping someone can help...i have a canon powershot a85 4.0megapixels. i am traveling in argentina and was on my way to copy photos from my 256mb card to disc. i was looking at the photos i had (had taken over 150 or sthg like that), erased a couple and turned the camera off. i opened it again, took a couple of pictures, re-looked at the last few and again turned it off. at this point, all was fine.
then i turned it on, took one more photo and realized that the display said 1/1 (1st photo of one photo). it is the only photo on there right now and i am slightly freaking out. the only reason i have one glimmer of hope is that the display also says that i have 7 more photos that i can take - which is basically what i had left when i looked at it last and it was fine (over 150 on there, 7 or so left to take given the room on the card). if it were empty (ie, i had truly accidentally erased all 150+ photos, it would say that i have way more photos still to take). where could these pics be???

i have been traveling for 6 months with this camera and this card and have let it get completely full many times and just copied pics to discs, etc, etc without any problems. it is obviously pretty difficult to erase all of the pictures on accident as you have to choose 4 or 5 options and i just know i didnt do that. nor do i believe i accidentally reformated it. but what else could i have done? could they be filed away somewhere?? is there still a way to view them on the camera?

any help will be very much appreciated. thanks a lot.

Where Are My Photos?

This type of thing must occur more often than we realize. Because there are lots of people writing programs to recover photos.

Almost all of these programs require that you have a card reader.
You can find card readers at Staples and WalMart and likely at any place that sells cameras.

I use a card reader for all of my cameras.
It is handier than connecting the camera to the computer.

There is a good chance that you will be able to read your card with a card reader, and recover your photos without any other software. Just use Windows Explorer to copy the photos from the camera to your computer.

Another Option:
Several people have reported that they took their card to a local photo processor and the processor read the files from the card and burned it to a CD for the customer. The fee was quite low.

If your photos have been erased:

Here is a freeware download that can recover lost files on a card. But you will need a card reader to use it:
