Memorex 16x DVD+R

Jan 16, 2006 8:39AM PST

Anybody have any problems with these discs? I recently bought a pack of 25, went home, popped one in, and tried to burn a flick with Nero. Best I could do was 4x (with an NEC 3500ag 16x double layer burner). Tried another movie, topped out at only 4x. What's the deal?

I had been using Verbatim +R 16x blanks with no problem, but wanted to try the Memorex since they were a lot cheaper.

I searched the forums for anything similar, didn't seem to find it.

Help!

Thanks!

Similar stories with replies or fixes that note a firmware update to the drive. Sometimes you have an update, sometimes not.

Memorex has a rep as "cheap" media

Note that it's just "cheap", not "cheap but good".

From what I've heard, Memorex media ranks near the bottom from the people who "know". Verbatim media is made by Matsushita Japan (MKM) and is ranked quite high. Another brand that ranks high is Taiyo something.

If you search online for a vendor you should find the Taiyo's in 100 pak for like $25. Throw in shipping and it's maybe $30 or so. I know Memorex is cheap (It's like $20 this week at CompUSA) but you get what you pay for.
