Media Player crashing when playing new CD

Nov 25, 2004 10:54AM PST

I could use a little help here.

I picked up the new U2 album last night and began to listen to it at home. On track 3 ("Sometimes you can't make it on your own") at the 3:05 mark, Media Player stops playing and crashes. I've tried closing and rebooting often and still the same result. Odd thing is, it crashes at the same spot every time. I skip to the 3:06 mark - and it plays just fine. I go back to 3:03 and it crashes again at 3:05.

I try iTunes, with the exact same results.

I take the disc back to the store and get a new copy - obviously mine is bogus, right?

The new disc has the exact same problem. I have since found two other places it crashes, in two other songs.

The odd part is that the tracks play just fine on my car CD player, and on my laptop for work - so I figure it can't be the disc.

My PC is using Media Player 10, while my laptop has Media Player 9. Is anyone aware of any issues with MP10 like this? Could it be that I need some new codec to play the disc?

I don't have any other issues with MP10 - so I'm pretty lost as to how to troubleshoot this. Can someone help?

1. Does your CDROM ( unknown model / manufacturer / age) have a play button (near the eject button) in the front side ?

2. If you insert a Pink Floyd CD (or whatever your taste is ) does it skip / crash under WMP 10 ?

The CD drive is a LG CD-RW CED-8083B from 2000. (4x RW). Unfortunately, there is only a CD jack, eject button and volume control on the front of it.

I moved the drive from my old computer to my new one about four months ago and have had no troubles playing any other CDs; I've played a few dozen on it including other U2, childrens music (have a toddler running around) and other. This is the only disc that has issues, and it's on the same four songs, in the same four spots.

I have since tried to rip a copy of the tracks in question using Media Player, but the program got hung up a the same spot in the copy process (62% into one song, for example).

Meanwhile, I have confirmed that the songs play fine on another car CD player. For this reason, I'm convinced I a some kind of software compatabiltiy issue. I also re-installed MP10, to no avail.

A couple of things to try first:

? Use a lens cleanner to clean the CD-RW drive lens.

? At My Computer, Right click Drive>Properties>Hardware Tab> Choose your CD-RW>Peoperties>Properties>Properties Tab. Where it says Enable Digital Music CD...., check if unchecked or uncheck if checked.

? Try other players: Real Player, WinAmp...

Then don't use Media Player.

The rip programs are widely available such as CDEX (hint:google.com) and if it fails then an error may exist on the CD. Microsoft is not known for software that deals well with error conditions.

In this case, the already suggested advises are all in the direction to surround the culprit.

For the Analog Playback selection in WMP, you?ll have to have the cable from CD-RW to your audio in connector (on the sound card or on motherboard if you?re using the integrated sound).
