Media player 10

Media player 10 on XP.
It won't play DVD's nor will it play AVI movie clips. I need codecs? Can I get these free somewhere?
Would I need anything else?

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

type in Codecs.

Or, goto http://www.divx.com and download their free player and codec pack. The codecs work for WMP as well as the DivX player.
