Media PC and Desktop PC at the same time?

Jun 10, 2010 11:22AM PDT

I'm trying to get the functional equivalent of a networked media PC and desktop PC while using just one machine. I believe my computer is powerful enough to do everything I want simultaneously, but I'm not sure the hardware and software available can do the job.
What I have is this:
Station 1: A pair of small pc speakers and a monitor on a desktop at one end of the room, with a wired keyboard and mouse.
Station 2: A television connected to my video card via HDMI, audio from the TV sent through a stereo receiver to stereo bookshelf speakers, a wireless radio keyboard and mouse.
Right now everything works at both "stations", but not the way I'd really like.
Here's what I'd like to do. At the very least, be able to see and hear one app (Firefox playing YouTube, a movie on Media Center, etc.) at one "station", while using another app with audio at the other. Ideally I'd like to be able to use a dual monitor setting other than Clone or Extended Desktop, since neither really describes what I have, and I'd like to set each screen with a resolution that works best for that screen (right now I either have tiny text on the TV or huge text on the monitor). Better still would be the ability to control each "station" with it's own cursor.
The idea is, for example, for me to be able to watch an internet based video on my TV at station two, using the mouse to control playback, while my wife, at station one, can check her email or play a PC game with sound. As it is, if we're playing simultaneously, we have to take turns with the mouse, and all of the audio goes to the Windows "default device", so only one of us can enjoy sound, and it's often more sound than my wife or I want.
Has anyone gotten anything close to this? I know it's possible, but I don't know if it's available.
Thanks!

having two computer is what/why? I am absolutely sure 2 computer will work; but your method might not work at all. How about giving it a try and let us know how it goes. Good luck.

Two Reasons: Money and Power
Jun 10, 2010 10:46PM PDT

I don't really want to spend money on a second computer. Also, if I did buy a cheap, low-end computer to use with my entertainment system, I could no longer run high-power applications at my television. With one $1000 PC, I can run almost all current software at either my TV or my desk, I just can't get it to do both at the same time, or even find a convenient way to switch from one to the other. I want all the power of my current system at either the TV, the desk, or, occasionally, both.

I've seen this solved.

But the price of the solution is more than a PC. Some can't accept that this one is as old as the PC. This is the old "second terminal on my PC" question.

We've been here before and the answers are the same.

Hope this helps you move on.

Maybe it will

Thanks Bob!
A second terminal is exactly what I'm trying to do, and I realize that it's an old question. I was just hoping that with the increase in dual-monitor support and with a new version of Windows (Win7) I could come close. I'd be satisfied with just solving the split audio and/or independent resolution issues.

While Windows 7 gave us a Play To feature.

You are asking for that same old thing many wanted years ago. Add a keyboard, display to some PC and get two users.

Sorry but this topic has been done before, the answers are the same so I'll just sum it up as no. Not in Windows today.

-> Look at the XBox 360 as the media center extension or the up and coming soon to be here BOXEE but that only addresses a media extender for a little less than a full PC.

Hope this helps you not repeat the old discussions.
