mds process intense and erratic

I'm running MacOS 10.6.3 on a MacBook Pro 2.0GHz Core Duo. Yesterday I replaced the hard drive, first installing Snow Leopard from the install DVD onto the new drive (temporarily housed in an external case), then placing the new drive into the machine, then migrating accounts from the old drive.

Although I the Spotlight index has been rebuilt, the mds process is still sometimes cycling very intensely, and the Activity Monitor will occasionally list it as running over 100% of the CPU. Naturally the laptop heats up and there is plenty of fan noise. Then as suddenly as the mds process revs up, it dies down again.

How can I keep this mds process under control?

Thanks in advance.
