McAfee VirusScan wants win95 winsock2 for updates

by jim2u4u / August 23, 2006 3:04 AM PDT

I recently installed Mcafee VirusScan. It won't update the virus list. It gives a " page cannot be displayed" and then says it found a earlier version of winsock2 and needs a updated version. It gives a button to take me to a windows 95 page from microsoft to download a winsock2. I have win xp home and don't think I should download a 10 yr old update?

Also, VirusScan now won't let my outlook express work. No email send/receive. I deselected the email and spam scans but it still won't let Outlook work.

Jim, Which Version Of McAfee?
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / August 23, 2006 6:51 AM PDT

Corporate or Retail? VirusSCan only or the full Security Suite? Is the McAfee firewall also installed? RIGHT click on the McAfee shield or the red "M" in the lower right corner, choose "VirusScan", then "About".

It sounds like you're having problems with the Virus List from Security Center. Is that correct? Or are you talking about updating the virus definitions files?

First, McAfee requires Internet Explorer to be the "default" browser. If it's not, please try making it so and see if that helps.

Next, please download the update Windows Script Engine from the link below and install it.. See if that helps.

Windows Script 5.6 for Windows 2000 and XP

Next, click on the links below to read some of the McAfee knowledgebase articles:

How do I update my McAfee products?

What should I do if I get a blank page when installing or updating?

How do I Install or Update VirusScan if "ActiveX must be enabled" Appears?

Hope this helps and let us know more.

Thanks for the help but it didn't work. I tried the winscript 5.6 engine update but still having problems with the winsock 2 reqest when I try to update v-scan ver. 10. outlook express still won't work when v-scan is installed. Also running Mcafee firewall, but e-mail works when just f-wall installed. f-wall will also not update.

Jim, Please Try This
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / August 28, 2006 4:10 AM PDT
In reply to: mcafee virusscan

Please click on Start---Run, type "cmd", and then click OK. At the command prompt, type:

Then press the "Enter" key. What that does is reset the winsock catalog to a clean state. You shouldn't get any errors.

You might also try the recommendations here if that doesn't fix it, though the steps are more involved.

Hope this helps.

Reload Winsock2 - Windows 95 Error
by Carol~ Moderator / August 23, 2006 10:29 AM PDT

Worth a try:

'Please click on Start---Run, type cmd, and then click OK. At the command prompt, type netsh Winsock reset and then click on enter'

Whether or not, it addresses the OE error, I don't know. Read what the McAfee Support Engineer has to say at the above link.
