McAfee VirusScan 8.0-vs.-Norton Antivirus 2004

Jul 5, 2004 2:11PM PDT

Which is the better anti-virus software? McAfee or Norton?
I prefer McAfee more, even though it seems to scan slower, it always finds virus's and "potentially unwanted programs" that Norton cannot...

A bunch of yrs ago I used Norton when all we had was DOS. then I got a computer with McAfee on it. I was happy until one day the McAfee decided not to load. I ended up with a worm that made me take my machine out of service. I couldn't run and of the anti virus's as they needed to use the RAM and that was whee the worm was. Bought a copy of Norton with its boot disk and booted the machine. Have stayed with Norton ever since. Have never had that kind of problem with Norton. Now I run Zone alarm and Norton Internet Security. Shotgun cure.

In short, almost 3/4 of the responders are not happy with the 2004 version. You can try your luck, but get a money back no questions asked in writing agreement if you are going to try it.

I can't comment on McAfee since we dropped them at the office about 2000 when they seemed to have some brainloss of developers. We couldn't take the crashing, so we went with Norton. Now, with the 2004 version we are avoiding that version and may wait for 2005 to see if they do a course correction.

For home and lab, I just use Free AVG and Zone Alarm, but Zone Alarm for the dos based windows is optional since no exploit has been found.
