McAfee Users Seeing False Positives To Games & DivX

Dec 30, 2008 6:52AM PST

ust a note to users of McAfee Antivirus and McAfee Security Suites..

There have been a number of false positive deletions of a variety of games files which show up as "generic.dx trojan". Unfortunately, the detection causes files to be deleted and the game or program won't function.. Disabling the background scanner from McAfee has allowed the games to be reinstalled but re-enabling the scanner causes the files to be deleted again..

Currently, most of the game files being removed come from BigFish.com, Shockwave, and Oberon Media (Pogo) games and downloads.

In addition, for those that have DivX decoders on their machines, the "divx ekg.exe" codec is also being removed..

So far, McAfee is indicating they will be releasing an update DAT file to fix the problem but they've been indicating the same since December 23.. Some of the false positives have been fixed but a few remain.. McAfee is recommending submission of detected files so they can eliminate them from their DAT file. There isn't much of a workaround except to set your On-Access scanner to Quarantine all deleted files instead of removing them entirely.. Quarantined files can be restored..

In addition, BigFish has released a method to get things running again:

http://bigfishgames.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/bigfishgames.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=906&p_sid=sO-jt7mj

Hope this helps and be careful out there...
