mcafee 9 question regarding daily dat files

I have just upgraded to Viruscan 9 on Windows 2000 Pro SP4 & all M/S updates

Version 9.1
Build 9.1.10
Engine Version 4.4.00
Dat Version 4.0.4613
Dat File Created 10/26/2005

I was only able to do the daily update doing an extraction from the .zip version, placing the scan, names and clean files in the VSO directory. I already know that 9.0 is designed to only do automatic weekly updates, but I prefer to do the daily updates.

On my earlier version 6, I was able to download and execute the xdat.exe file to accomplish this task. Now when I do this I get the following error message.

SuperDat Notify
Unable to read registry.

Is there a fix or work around for this problem other than manually extracting the daily files from the zip?

Virus Scan 9 Online is a totally different beast than your earlier version of VS 6. Virus Scan 9 must be updated by extracting the "scan.dat, names.dat and clean.dat files". Virus Scan 7 retail and ealier, as well as the newest corporate versions are able to use the Superdat installer to install both scan engines and virus definitions. VS 9 IS NOT ABLE to use the Superdat installer.

Clearly, the Superdat installer is an easier way to install the dat files but unfortunately, although many have already told McAfee of their concerns, we have seen no indication for them to change.

At this point, you'll need to continue to follow the procedures you are using...There is no workaround. The newest Virus Scan 10 DOES receive daily updates. There has been a small amount of discussion that VS 9 "might" eventually get daily dats, but the newest VS 11 is already being created and as such, I believe it unlikely that daily dats will occur for VS 9. Sorry.

In my case, instead of doing "daily" updates on the machines which require manual updates, I update them on Wednesday evenings (which your VS 9 should already be doing with it's automatic updates) and on Friday evenings. It's as "current" as I can make them and still keep my sanity.

Doesn't help but certainly answers the question. If I go back to 6.0 then I have to disable the Microsoft Windows Installer, which is why I went to a "newer" version. I guess I'll update to 10 and see what lies in store.
